BMW Rider Training

Founder of GlobeBusters, Kevin Sanders, is also the head of BMW Motorrad UK's Road Rider Training Programme, BMW Rider Training. BMW Rider Training provides all forms of motorcycle training from CBT and Direct Access to Advanced riding to RoSPA standard.

When any UK resident rider books on a GlobeBusters Epic or a GlobeBusters Overland trip, we include advanced rider training with BMW Rider Training instructors as part of your pre-departure expedition preparation.

Some riders decide to brush up their riding skills or just have check on their riding before coming on an Expedition. These are the types of post test training courses that BMW Rider Training Offer and there is a range of hire bikes available for training: G650GS, F650GS, F800GS, R1200R, R1200GS and R1200RT.

Road Skills Assessment

road-skills-assessmentThis is a great one day course aimed at riders who have passed Direct Access in recent years but is also suitable for any other rider and who simply want a health check on their riding.

The morning session is carried out on our training pad, with the focus on slow manoeuvres and braking, using specially designed exercises to improve your control. In the afternoon, you will ride with an instructor through the Brecon Beacons, covering a variety of different types of roads, which will highlight strengths and weaknesses in your riding.

Refresher Level 1

refresher-level-1This two-day / two-night course is aimed at those who have had a long break from riding.

The course is structured to provide a thorough familiarisation of the motorcycles, together with riding exercises on our private training facility.

Once you have achieved a good standard of competence and confidence, we will then move onto the road. We will cover up to 200 miles during this course.

Intermediate Level 2

intermediate-level-2This three-day / three-night course is designed to improve the ability of those who ride regularly, but may not cover many miles each year, or for those who may have developed bad habits. We cover all aspects of riding from basic slow manoeuvres to riding on all types of roads.

Using Roadcraft - The Police Riders Handbook as our bible, we will cover topics such as counter-steering, cornering, overtaking, observation and planning, road positioning and low speed control.

We will cover up to 400 miles on this course. We aim to bring your riding to the minimum set standard of the DSA Enhanced Rider Scheme (and often the standard you achieve will be well above this).

Advanced Level 3

This course is for more experienced riders who cover a greater than average number of miles per annum, but wish to fine tune their skills using advanced riding techniques.

advanced-level-3

The course is run over three days / three nights and will aim to bring your riding to the equivalent level of a RoSPA pass, the highest civilian advanced motorcycle qualification in the UK.

In meeting the RoSPA standard on this course, you would also qualify for the DSA Enhanced Rider Scheme. We cover up to 600 miles on this course. There is the option to extend the course by an additional day to take the RoSPA test.

CBT & Direct Access

cbt-direct-accessBMW Rider Training offers one and two day CBT courses, as well as an intensive residential package for Direct Access that combines taking Module 1 and Module 2 of the motorcycle test.

Why tell you this? Because GlobeBusters gets customers who have never ridden a bike before but fancy the challenge!

About Off Road Skills

BMW Rider Training works in conjunction with the BMW Off Road Skills. Both training bodies are co-located on Woodlands Business Park in Ystradgynlais and Kevin Sanders is also an off road instructor, working closely with the BMW Off Road Skills Director, Simon Pavey.

For certain Expeditions (see your chosen Trip Details), GlobeBusters strongly recommends the riders should have been on the Level One Off Road Skills Course, prior to coming on the trip.

Michael Cannard

BMW Rider Training, Off Road Skills and GlobeBusters are able to combine their expertise to provide even a non-motorcyclists with the skills to undertake huge epic journeys, such as the Trans Americas. Michael Cannard came to BMW Rider Training in March 2006 having never ridden before. By August 2007, he was riding the Dalton Highway up to Prudhoe Bay on the GlobeBusters Trans Americas Expedition!

In the space of 16 months, Michael had passed his motorcycle test, achieved an advanced RoSPA test pass and had undertaken Off Road Skills training. Over this period of time. Michael committed to a regular riding programme which saw him cover thousands of miles and move from his original F650GS to riding the R1200GS Adventure. Although on paper, the least experienced, Michael's commitment meant he proved to be one of the most competent riders on the trip, successfully arriving in Ushuaia in December 2007, having never dropped his bike throughout the whole trip. That's quite an amazing record!

Mike Carter

Mike Carter is a freelance journalist and writes for The Guardian and The Observer. In December 2005, drunk at a Christmas Party, Mike announced to his colleagues that, to escape from his everyday life and a broken marriage, he was going off to ride a motorcycle around Europe for six months. We took his call in January - he did not know how to ride.

Mike Carter was the first person to train with BMW Rider Training and he passed his test first time, under the expert eye of the DSA Examiner, Mr Pass! Within a month Mike was back in Wales to pick up his R1200GS and take a few more miles under Kevin's guidance. Mike spent six months travelling through Europe, 27 countries and over 20,000 miles and wrote about his experience in "Uneasy Rider".

In 2008, Mike joined GlobeBusters on the High Andes Expedition in 2008, riding through Chile and Argentina. You can read about his experience in the travel section of guardian.co.uk
